Growing Research at Fordham! Out of the Ivory Tower: Fostering the Public Intellectual
Wednesday, 2 May 2012 | 1 – 7:30 p.m. (Public Intellectual Workshop at 4 p.m., Award Ceremony at 6 p.m.) O'Keefe Commons | O'Hare Hall | Rose Hill Campus
"Out of the Ivory Tower: Fostering the Public Intellectual" is the theme of this year's second annual full-day "Growing Research at Fordham!" event, which will culminate with a reception and award ceremony announcing Fordham's 2012 Funded-Research Scholars in each area of the humanities, sciences, social sciences, and professions.
Fordham's collaboration with The OpEd Project (www.theopedproject.org) will be the keystone of the day's events. OpEd—forged out of initial efforts at Stanford University that have since spread to Yale, Princeton, NYU, and now Fordham—has the mission of cultivating a greater diversity of voices from American academia to weigh in on the world's most prestigious platforms of public opinion. OpEd is currently working with 20 female and/or minority Fordham faculty in a yearlong fellowship to add these faculty members' powerful expertise and critical perspective to media outlets hungry to hear from them, but whose contributors unfortunately still fail to reflect the diversity of the world around us.
Alumni, students, faculty, and staff are invited to hear OpEd founder, Catherine Orenstein, and learn why CNN, NPR, The New York Times and a host of other news sources are celebrating OpEd's faculty fellows; how Fordham faculty whose views had formerly been hidden in journals read by an elite few are now regularly contributing their insights to the Christian Science Monitor, Huffington Post, and other arenas of public debate; and even capture a few techniques for yourself, so you can become a more informed consumer of—and perhaps contributor to—such fora for the public intellectual.
Schedule: 1 - 4 p.m.: Afternoon bohemian library-café with live music, food, and feting of recent faculty publications 4 - 6 p.m.: An after-tea presentation and workshop by The OpEd Project, as featured on NPR, CNN, and The New York Times 6 - 7:30 p.m.: Second annual Fordham Funded-Research Scholars award ceremony and reception
